The “Studium Juris”, founded in Macerata in 1290, is one of the oldest in Europe. Seven centuries of history and tradition have consolidated its cultural heritage based on the recognized quality of teaching and the high level of scientific research.  In line with its noble tradition, the Department of Law proposes a high quality training, ensuring access to the professions of lawyer, judge, and notary. It is also effective for the preparation of labour consultant, transport consultant, judicial and criminological operator, public administration professional, social services professional and legal expert for innovation.
The Department of Law puts a special focus on the international training of future jurists. It offers students the possibility to pursue post-graduate education through Doctoral Programmes in Law and Innovation, the Specialisation School for Legal Professions, and the Specialisation School in Labour Rights, Labour and Social Security Law. From the academic year 2013/2014 the Department of Law, in collaboration with the Université d'Orléans, offers students the opportunity to undertake a bi-national degree course in Italian and French Law, for the achievement of the one-block degree in Law in Italy and the French qualifications of Licence en droit and Master 2. Furthermore, from the academic year 2017/2018 the Department of Law launched a multiple degree course in Italian and French Law with the Faculté Libre de Droit et d’Economie et de Gestion – FACO of Paris, it offers students the opportunity to undertake the one-block degree in Law in Italy and the qualification corresponding to the French ‘licence en droit’ and M1, delivered by Faco.

The Department of Law has particularly distinguished itself in the evaluation of scientific research (Italian “VQR 2011-2014”) and it is one of the fifteen Italian Departments of Law to be the winner of the “Departments of Excellence”. The theme of the project is “Law and Innovation. Europe and China facing the challenges of globalization”. This important recognition took place in 2018 and the funding obtained is allowing to expand the number of teaching and non-teaching staff, to finance research grants and PhD scholarships, to invest in an internationalization program for students and teachers. It is also helping to realize a research centre on the topics covered by the project. The aforementioned financing also made it possible to redevelop the new legal library, which was inaugurated on 19 February 2019, and to create a recreational space in the internal courtyard of the historic building.
